Did you know that the Colosseum, the largest and oldest amphitheatre in the world, is made of Travertine? It is no wonder that travertine is gaining popularity for its beauty and durability for all types of buildings. Whether it is used for homes or commercial properties, travertine offers a sophisticated and durable finish.
What is Travertine?
Travertine is a type of limestone which is 100% natural rock and it can be found deposited around mineral springs. This gives it its smooth colouring and finish. Centuries ago in ancient Rome, several historical structures were made from travertine such as the Colosseum. Even Turkey discovered this gem and built the ancient city of Ephesus with travertine. Its durability withstands the test of time as we still appreciate and enjoy these historical structures thousands of years later.

Unique colours and patterns
Due to travertine’s natural occurrence, no piece is the same and each travertine tile is slightly varied in colour from its neighbouring tile. This unique property makes it visually pleasing, and further contributes to its overall natural sophistication. Travertine is a sedimentary stone and absorbs minerals such as iron. This allows for the chemical process of oxidation to take place where the iron oxide colouring deposits itself into the travertine. This creates stunning and eye-catching variations in colour.
